The Personalities of Ballroom Dance

There are as many different personalities of dance as there are dances. No, I'm not talking about dancers. I'm talking about the dances themselves. Each one has it's own style of music, dance steps, and styling, that combine to create a unique flavor. Here are some examples.

Many people recognize the waltz by it's unique 3-4 timing. (It's counted 1-2-3-1-2-3 instead of 1-2-3-4-1-2-3-4 like most other dances). It's also has a very timeless, elegant style. Foxtrot has similar steps and a classic, wholesome quality, but can be a little cheeky, too, depending on the music.

Tango mixes soft and sharp movements with intermittent fast and slow timing to create tons of drama and flair. Swing is the iconic American high energy "happy" dance.

At first, Latin dances may seem almost indistinguishable, but they too have their personalities. Rumba is slow and romantic. Cha cha is flirty, and sexy. Salsa is fast and fun. Samba is a Brazilian party dance with a rhythm all it's own.

So, whether you prefer a sassy cha cha, or the gentle sway of a timeless waltz, there is a "dance personality" to fit every mood and every situation.  Now if you'll excuse me, I need to put on some music.
